As Davis Facilitators, we provide a high-impact intervention for ADHD but we don’t provide diagnostic services. Despite this, we frequently receive enquiries from adults looking for a diagnosis. This isn't surprising — it is difficult to find a practitioner who will diagnose ADHD in adults, for whom there are long backlogs in the system.
To help fill this diagnostic void, I want to share some signs of adult ADHD that I encounter daily with my clients. Since everyone is different, the ADHD spectrum varies – some may experience just a few of these signs, while others may relate to many, or even all of them.
Heightened anxiety
Poor sleep quality
Strong sense of justice
Presence of phobias
Difficulty focusing on one task at a time
You shift between periods of intense activity and phases of exhaustion where it’s hard to do anything, making it tough to find a balance
A constant need to prove to others that you’re worthy and loveable
Often reliving thoughts about the past, especially adolescence and young adulthood
Clutter and disorder around you
You struggle to let go of things you don’t need
Difficulty moving from ‘wanting’ to ‘doing’
Procrastination is a familiar term
Frequent boredom
You enjoy giving advice and teaching others
Tendency to be either highly talkative or quite the opposite
You are often puzzled by others’ behaviour and what they mean when they say things
You feel the need to study others' behaviour and then copy it in similar situations
Unclear understanding of what you want, or of the emotions you are feeling
Difficulty managing dependencies or addictive behaviours
Background noise is always present (e.g., TV or radio on)
Struggle to relax both body and mind
Struggle with meditation
Naturally restless or impulsive
Frequent signs of dyspraxia
You struggle to foresee consequences
Tendency to repeat mistakes without learning from them
Frequently late to appointments
You often attribute blame for your problems to others
You experience panic attacks
Here's the thing!
